India's Trade Deal with the U.S. Raises Doubts Among Economists

India's plan to purchase $500 billion worth of U.S. goods over five years as part of a trade deal is sparking skepticism among economists. They caution that this could potentially distort commercial procurement practices and significantly impact New Delhi's trade balance.

President Donald Trump recently announced a reduction in tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18%, which was welcomed in India. However, he has requested India to double its annual imports of U.S. goods in exchange.

In the fiscal year 2024-25, bilateral trade between the two countries amounted to $132 billion, with India enjoying a surplus of around $41 billion.

Trade experts and economists are questioning the feasibility of achieving $100 billion in annual imports without a clear policy directive that encourages companies to source from American suppliers.

"The numbers don't quite add up," said Madhavi Arora, an economist at Emkay Global, describing the target as more "aspirational than realistic".

A joint statement released by both nations outlined India's intention to purchase $500 billion worth of U.S. goods, a language that falls short of a binding commitment. However, Trump has shown little tolerance for countries that do not meet their targets, as evidenced by the recent tariff increase on certain South Korean goods.

India and the U.S. have agreed to enhance procurement of oil, gas, coking coal, and aircraft from American sources, as stated in the joint statement.

Arora warned that such targets might imply government influence on private sector sourcing decisions, potentially leading to inefficiencies.

While India has highlighted significant Boeing orders as part of the plan, some analysts suggest that companies could still prefer Airbus if they offer better commercial terms. Indian markets initially reacted positively but economists note that investors are cautious about the $500 billion commitment.

"The markets appear to be skeptical about the $500 billion purchase plan," said Dhiraj Nim, an economist at ANZ.

Impact on India's Trade Balance

The U.S. is India's primary export destination, accounting for nearly 20% of the country's total exports in the fiscal year 2024-25.

If exports remain stable while imports surge, India's significant bilateral surplus could shrink, leading to a wider overall trade deficit. In 2024-25, India recorded a total goods trade deficit of $283.5 billion.

"A $100 billion annual import target would greatly disrupt India's trade balance," noted independent trade expert Biswajit Dhar.

He added that the current deal primarily focuses on maintaining access to India's crucial market rather than boosting exports.
